Guachisnai, a carnival word

Carnival word, Guachisnai, typical of Gaditan speech

On this strip of land occupied by Cádiz, you’re almost always a stranger. Un extranjero. The word is, in fact, difficult to pronounce for anyone who doesn’t speak the language, with its “jota” (j) separated from the rolled “r” by just a single vowel. A “jota,” a letter that’s practically spat out in Spanish, which you learn to pronounce as early as elementary school, since speaking as if you were clearing your throat isn’t something that comes naturally.

Guachisnai, a carnival word

Gua-chis-nai / What's your name?

In this city where we live under the open sky, carried along by the winds and the palm fronds, the residents have gotten into the habit of catching words on the fly, just as they hear them.

Thus was born the word " guachisnai" - pronounced "gouachinaïe", synonymous with the word "extranjero": a "casera" word, typical of Gaditan speech, not to be found in Spanish dictionaries.

The story goes that the word is derived from the question "What's your name?", from the days when English merchants landing in the Bay of Cadiz would inquire about the names of the local lads. "What's your name?" / "Comment t'appelles-tu? A primary question, classic of all odysseys, which, heard, triturated and spat out by Gaditan ears and mouths, would have ended in "guachisnai".

Gua-chis-nai / What’s-your-name: In France, some of our poets have added “red caps” to the dictionary. The people of Cádiz, on the other hand, transform words from top to bottom. To poke fun (“bromar”) at others, but also to laugh at themselves and at what they think they hear. A folksy, carnival-like laughter, typical of the grotesque that the Spanish call “el gracioso.” A grotesque that breaks things apart and puts them back together, much like sticking a fake mustache onto a word after painting and applying makeup to it.

How about we put together your Cadix?😉
