On August 18, 1947, an explosion at the Spanish Navy’s ammunition depot destroyed part of Cádiz’s “casco antiguo.” The toll: hundreds dead, thousands injured, and entire neighborhoods razed to the ground. The story of this tragedy is told in the video below.

Gaditan resilience

70 years after the explosion, the stigma seems to have disappeared. Cadiz and its province have lost none of their beauty, with natural parks, beaches and white villages. And gaditans of all generations still spread out the day on café terraces or around the benches of the many squares.
