Unusual: Restaurant TÍo DE LA TIZA

Unusual: Taberna El tío de La Tiza

It was Amalia from the "La Viña " district who first advised us to go and taste the sea bream "en la plancha", the "tortillitas de camarones " and other Gaditan specialties at El tío de La Tiza, the family "taberna" located behind her house . Originally opened in 1979, its owners Antonio Saborido and Loli Perales christened it " El pájaro pinto", literally the multicolored bird. Or the original, the eccentric, to designate anyone who stands out for his or her behavior, opinions and style of dress; the "funny bird".

We won't know which bird Antonio and Loli were thinking of; they've since disappeared. Their four sons, now in command, might be able to answer.

This modest, open-plan "rincón" with a tiny kitchen and the neighborhood square as its dining room quickly became popular. So much so, in fact, that the gaditans of the Viña renamed it after the square: " Tío de la Tiza "; in other words, "the uncle with the chalk". But that's not the whole story.

Where does the name "El tío de La Tiza" come from?

After a stroll, take a break or a long break at El tío de La Tiza.

Since March 2024, the Saborido Perales brothers have expanded the place. You can now "tapear" (have a tapa) or have a drink inside; on the wall, you'll find Antonio and Loli seated by the tables and shellfish tank. Or you may prefer the ambiance of the terrace. Neighbors from the neighborhood or from Jerez, Sevillians, Madrilenians, English people passing through... or las guiritanas.

A word of advice: reserve your table in advance.
